SPARTA -- Funeral services for Martha Willene Wilhite Green, 82, of White County, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Corinth Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Green died Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, in Life Care Center of Sparta.
She was born July 18, 1928, in White County to the late Harvey and Maggie Martin Wilhite.
Mrs. Green was a lifelong resident of the Cassville community. After attending David Lipscomb University and Tennessee Tech, Mrs. Green taught 42 years in the White County school system. She taught at Jones's Chapel, New Hope, Shady Grove, Hensley's Chapel, Cassville, Central View, Doyle, East Sparta City School and Woodland Park.
While at Jones's Chapel, she met her husband of 62 years, Henry Joe Green, as he rode a horse to check the fences and the new school teacher.
She was a pioneer of special education in White County in the 1960s, as she helped establish the EMR classes and the Exceptional Workshop. Upon her retirement, she continued to enjoy her family, friends and church family at Corinth Church of Christ. Many families were the recipients of her warm yeast rolls or other kind, helpful acts over the years. Helping others was her joy in life.
Her family includes her husband, Henry Joe Green of Cassville; a daughter and son-in-law, Glenda and Barry Jones of Silver Point; two grandchildren, Kris Jones and wife Heather of Silver Point and Trent Jones and wife Stephanie of Chapel Hill; two great-grandchildren, Eva Rose Jones of Chapel Hill and Grayson Jones of Silver Point; a twin brother, Martin Eugene Wilhite of Cookeville; two brothers-in-law, W.T. Green of Sparta and Charles Walker of Elizabethton, Ky.
Although Mrs. Green only had one child, she was blessed with 16 nieces and nephews and their respective spouses, who enriched her life.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her in-laws, Jimmy and Sally Green; two brothers, Cooke and Willard Wilhite; and four sisters, Ruth Camp, Patty Holland, Lola Bell Wilhite and Dymple Wilhite.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. Green's nephews.
John Pippin and Joe Neal will officiate at the services.
