AN OLD SOLDIER DIES

Mahlon Gardner Passes Away
Saturday at Age 70 Years

Mahlon Gardner died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grace Butler, living one and one-half miles north of Villisca, last Saturday afternoon, September 13, 1913; the cause of his death being liver trouble. Mr. Gardner had been failing gradually of late and was sick eight weeks prior to his death.
Mahlon Gardner was born at Urichsville, Tuscarawas county, Ohio, July 5, 1843, being at the time of his death 70 years, 2 months and eight days old. At the age of thirteen he moved with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gardner, to Illinois and at the opening of the Civil war he joined the 39th Illinois infantry. He was engaged in many battles of the war and served four years, four months and eleven days. He was married in 1879 to Mrs. Clarinda Davis near Farmer City, Illinois. To this union but one child was born, a daughter; Grace, at whose home he died. The family came to Iowa 22 years ago, moving on a farm near Villisca. Mrs. Gardner died about six years before her husband. Mr. Gardner was a deep religious man, being a member of the M. E. Church for the past thirty-five years and attending regularly when he was able. He was also a member of the Villisca Post of the G. A. R.
He is survived by three brothers; James of Bloomington, Illinois; George, of Villisca, and D. L. of Berea, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Hannah Patton, of Villisca; and one daughter, Mrs. Jacob Butler, of near Villisca. All were present at the funeral except James Gardner, of Bloomington, Illinois.
The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. J. Ewing, of the Presbyterian church. The G. A. R. local post and the John A. Logan Circle attended the services in a body by request. Interment was made in the Villisca cemetery.
