Anton Maule, son of James and Catherine (Vopot) Maule was born December 13, 1890 at Prague, Nebraska. He was one of eleven children.
Anton's father, James Maule was born in Bohemia in 1852. With a group of emigrants, he came to America, settling at Chicago and found work in a cigar factory.
After working a while he went on to Oklahoma to work on odd jobs, James then came to Prague, NE finding Mr. and Mrs. Mike Bures and Catherine Vopot (Mrs. Mike Bures's sister). Who also lived in Bohemia.
James Maule married Catherine and they started out for O'Neill territory, where they could get a homestead. Oxens and barrowed money, they tried their luck, only to lose everything. This was near Inman, NE.
The blizzard of 1888 was real hard on them, one neighbor came home from trading post carrying a sack of flour, he stopped at the James Maule home to get warm, then continued on to his place only a half mile away. They found him frozen to death with the sack of flour held tight in his arms.
James and Catherine took their children back to Prague, NE to find work with relatives. After saving up a little more money by May 1895, they left again in a two seated spring buggy carrying the family and all their belongings for Niobrara, NE where they could take up another claim for a homestead in their oldest daughter's name, "Fannie Maule." This was near Verdel, NE.
Here they lived in a dugout, in the side of a hill from late August through the winter, their house was built from Clay Slate Rocks, with a thatch roof made from Blue Stem Grass.
The next year, Fannie died from Tuberculosis--a little later a baby died also. They were buried west of the new house on the top of the hill.
Couple years later a larger house was built leaving the old to become a barn for their animals.
James and Catherine moved after thirteen years here to Irons, Michigan, taking only the last two children, Clara and Martin with them.
Anton Maule at the age of twelve went to work for a farmer for $80.00 a year. Before the year was up, he was so homesick his folks had to come and get him.
Anton Maule was united in marriage to Ellen Buck June 22, 1918 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Bloomfield.
Anton was also called into service of World War I the same year. This war took him to France and he was on the Burial Corp. After a year in service Anton and his wife Ellen settled down on a farm west of Bloomfield.
Three sons and three daughters were born on to this union. Viastimil was born April 15, 1920, married Romona Bogner from Crofton in 1941. He served in the service during WWII.
Donald was born August 23, 1921, married Eva Sukup from Verdigre in 1942. He served his country during WWII.
Joe was born March 20, 1923, was lost in the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1942.
Betty was born November 25, 1926, married Romayne Ellis from Crofton 1946.
Antionette was born September 30, 1929, married Williard Drobny from Verdigre in 1946.
Anton and Ellen moved on their own farm south of Bloomfield in 1948 and retired in 1958 in the city of Bloomfield.
Ellen passed away August 20, 1972 at the age of 75 years. Anton passed away June 15, 197 at the age of 85 years.
