John Milton Buttery, was the son of John Belden Buttery & his 1st wife, Mercy Weed. He came from Cortland to the Niagara Frontier in 1830, he was a man of many talents throughout his life ALL of which are recorded in a historical book titled "Niagara County New York". He married the former Priscilla Nichols on April 7, 1835 & they had 10 children, 3 died as infants. He built the once world famous 'Buttery Whirlpool Rapids Elevators' as a tourist attraction along the high bank of the Niagara River in what was then known as the "Suspension Bridge area", this attraction was in operation from 1856-1899 & operated by the family until they were destroyed during a storm in the gorge & burned by controlled fire on Jan. 09, 1901. He was survived by his Father, John B. Buttery who served in the War of 1812 & fought in the battle at Lundy's Lane. He is survived by his wife Priscilla & children, Sarah, Robert, John D., Earl, Addie, Wilbur & Priscilla. He was Pre-deceased by 3 children, Harmon, Emmett & Eugenia. He's buried in Oakwood Cemetery, a large monument attests to his wealth & character.
