World War II Ace. Holder of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. 108 Aerial Victories. He is probably best know for being co-credited with shooting down Soviet ace Yekaterina Budanova, one of the few woman aces of World War II, in 1943. His first assignment was to Jadgeschwader (JG 3) "Udet" in July of 1941. By the summer of 1942, he was an ace, and his score climbed rapidly after that, as he achieved his 30th through 40th victories in August 1942. In December, he was shot down near Stalingrad but was only lightly injured, returning to duty almost immediately. He scored his 50th victory in March 1943 and his 100th in July, and was named squadron commander of the 8th squadron of JG 3. He was awarded the Knight's Cross to the Iron Cross on August 29, 1943, with 104 victories, about the time JG 3 was transferred to Germany to take part in the Defense of the Reich. After his last four victories over four-engined bombers, he was shot down by a flight of 332nd Fighter Group P-47's over Holland. The remains of his aircraft were discovered in 1994. He also was awarded the Luftwaffe Honor Cup and the German Cross in Gold.
