Most records show his first name as John. Early US Federal Census records list him as Ira. His grave marker reads J. A. McNeill. [In checking with other family researchers in 2010, it is agreed that Ira and John are the same person.]
John worked as a general merchant. He was killed instantly when his "clothing caught on drive shaft of corn mill." [From his NC death certificate] This was 8 days after his 46th birthday. He left a wife and 5 young children. A daughter Marie died in 1907.
His wife, Ida C. Covington McNeill, did not remarry. She died 34 years later.
Note: John's NC death certificate erroneously states he was to be buried at Bear Branch Cemetery. There are McNeill and Bennett family plots at Bear Branch with both his and Ida's parents but he is at Eastside with Ida, son John Charles "Hap" and daughters Marie McNeill and Grace Elizabeth McNeill Kirkley.
