Son of Dr. Edward and Rosetta Atkinson, of Glenwilliam Castle, Ballingarry, Co. Limerick, and Skea House, Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh.

John Atkinson, was educated at Belfast Academy, Belfast, and at Queen's University, Galway, Ireland.
He was admitted to King's Inn, Dublin in 1865 entitled to practice as a Barrister-at-Law.
He was invested as a Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) in 1880.
Bencher of the King's Inns, Dublin, 1885.
He held the office of Solicitor-General [Ireland] between 1889 and 1902.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1892.
He held the office of Attorney-General [Ireland] in 1892.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1895.
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for North Londonderry between 1895 and 1905.
He held the office of Attorney-General [Ireland] between 1895 and 1905.
He was created Baron Atkinson, of Glenwilliam in County Limerick [U.K. Law Lord] on 19 December 1905.
He held the office of Bencher of Inner Temple in 1906.

He married Rowena Jane Chute on 22 March 1873. She died in 1911.

He retired as a judge in 1928.
He died at his residence, 39, Hyde Park Gate, London.
