Maretta Biggs Brown Staples, daughter of Wiley Nicholas and Margaret Jane Biggs, was born Sept. 10, 1858 in Schuyler Co. IL. She was from a family of eight children, having four brothers and three sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She came with her father's family to Basco when just a small child. With the exception of three years when she resided in Kansas, Basco was her home. On Nov. 11, 1875 she was united in marriage with John C. Brown, who passed away twenty-nine years ago. To this union were born five children, James Eural Brown of Augusta, IL, Estella Minnie Sells of Basco, Mabel who died at 18 months of age, Flossie Jewel who died Oct. 8, 1907 aged 18 years, and George Dewey who died at the age of 4 months. Both Mr. and Mrs. Brown were members of the Basco Methodist Church and were faithful and earnest workers in every activity of the church. Mr. Brown was for many years director of the church choir. When the present church building was remodeled, a beautiful window was places as a memorial to them by their children. She was a member of the Opportunity Circle and of the Eastern Star Lodge and took a keen interest in both. On April 26, 1927, she was married for the second time to Mr. John Staples of Fowler, Kansas who passed away at their home in Fowler October of 1931. After her (second) husband's death, Mrs. Staples returned to Basco to make her home with her daughter. (Bio from Staples family files) Added death place from Ms. Mandy, contributor #46509791
