William was the son of John and Mary Prentice Muir of Scotland with siblings: James, Samuel, John, Jean, Fannie, Maggie, and Mary who died in Scotland. He first married Anna Meikle who died in Montreal, Canada, and after her death married Margaret Weddell on 22 June 1836 in Wood County, Ohio. William was a farmer. He had first landed in Canada in 1832 but because cholera was widespread, the family quickly went to Buffalo, New York. They met David Wilkerson who was captain of the schooner "Eagle." He persuaded them to come to Perrysburg. William died from paralysis at the age of 7 days past his seventy-first birthday.
