VETERAN COUNTY FARMER EXPIRES
Simon Sell Passes Away After Extended Illness at Age of 77 at Residence In Freedom Township.
Simon Sell, a prominent citizen of Freedom township, where he was long engaged in agricultural pursuits, died at his residence near Leamersville at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon of a complication of diseases, he having been in failing health since last July.
He was the youngest of eight sons of Daniel and Rachel Detwiler Sell and was born at the family homestead in Freedom township on July 30, 1854. He resided in that township all his life.
In his earlier years he was employed at the furnace at McKee, being associated for an extended period with the late Jesse L. Hartman in a supervisory capacity at the furnace, and he was always held in very high regard by Mr. Hartman. When the furnace was closed down about 1889, Mr. Sell acquired a farm and spent the remainder of his life in agricultural work, specializing in fruit growing. He was noted for his extraordinary strength and capacity for work.
He was prominently identified with the public life of his native township and for a number of years he held the position of road supervisor. In his religious affiliations he was a member of the Church of the Brethren, being one of the pioneer members of the Leamersville church, which he served on the official board and was identified with the Sunday school and other activities of the church throughout his life, formerly serving as chorister.
He was united in marriage with Miss Mary Benton on Oct. 15, 1876, the ceremony having been performed by his brother, Rev. Daniel D. Sell of Plattsburg, Mo., who had come east at the time to attend the centennial celebration in Philadelphia. To this union eleven children were born, seven of whom, together with their mother, survive. They are as follows: Mrs. Martha Brubaker of Cross Keys, Mrs. Cora Brubaker of Loop, Mrs. Rachel Claar of East Freedom, Thomas A. Sell of Claysburg, Mrs. Pearl Bowser of Salemville and Mrs. Susie Beck and James Matthew Sell, who reside near the parental home. Rev. James A. Sell of Hollidaysburg is his only surviving brother. There are also forty-nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
The funeral services will be conducted at the Leamersville church on Tuesday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock, the pastor, Rev. Samuel Weyant, officiating, assisted by Rev. J.Q. Showalter and Rev. John B. Miller. Interment will be made in Riverview cemetery.
