On Tuesday last week our neighbor, Eli Stokes called at our house to ask if he could do anything for us in the absence of the head of the family. This week the same day found him dead of pneumonia. He passed away on Monday evening, January 9, at the home of his nephew Jacob Yeaple, on Eltinge Avenue. He was a neighbor who showed is kindness not only in words but in practical helpfulness. He was energetic, industrious, with a sturdy independence and an individuality which in the best cases distinguishes the man who has been brought up in God's country. He was the son of John F. Stokes who owned Mohonk before it became the property of the Smiley brothers. After an absence of a number of years he returned to our village last fall. He said he had come back here to end his days, but no one thought it would be so quickly as he was a man of great energy for his years.
He is survived by two sons.
To those that mourn his loss he leaves he example of an honest manly and honorable life.
He was about seventy-five year old. The funeral is held Thursday afternoon at the home of Jacob Yeaple at two o'clock. Interment at New Paltz Cemetery.
