College Football Player. He was a football player for the University of Mississippi. Born Roy Lee "Chucky" Mullin, he was an Ole Miss defensive back who was paralyzed during the Homecoming game while trying to tackle Vanderbilt fullback Brad Gaines on October 28, 1989. The impact shattered the 4th vertebrae in Mullins' cervical spine, immediately making him a quadriplegic patient. Although he rallied and returned to classes, he died 18 months later from a pulmonary embolism. Each year, one Ole Miss player is given the "Chucky Mullins Courage Award" for showing the spirit and courage of Mullins and is allowed to wear Mullins' No. 38 jersey the following season. Mullins's story was memorialized in a documentary film, "Undefeated: The Chucky Mullins Story" and also the SEC Storied Documentary film, "It's Time."
