He and his family came with his wife's brothers in the autumn of 1839. He practiced medicine for a few years; he then moved to a farm two miles south of Rockford on the Kishwaukee Road and lived there 2 years. He moved to Rockford where he opened a drug store. He was a member of the Congregational Church; he played bass viola there. Known children: Caroline M.B (m. Walter A. Dickerman); Frederick Alden (m.Frances Davis; Nellie); Harriet Newell (m. Evans Blake); Edward Payson (m. Mary Kent); Henry Martyn (Sgt, Co G 45th Illinois Volunteer Inf, drowned while rescuing passengers from a burning troop transport on the Mississippi River); Anna Eliza; and Eliza Marsh (m. Stephen Jesse Caswell).
