Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Also known as Nicholas Meaher, he was issued the award on December 20, 1869 for his actions as a corporal with Company G, 1st US Cavalry, US Army, on February 14, 1870, during a campaign at the Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona. He enlisted in the US Army under the name Nicholas Meaher and was sent to the Western Frontier, and attained the rank of sergeant at the time of his discharge. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry In action." Note the biography states he received his MOH prior to the action for which the award was given. Something is incorrect.
