Born Anna Maria Kreft in Kriefkohl (Freiwalde), West Prussia, Germany. (Today, Kriefkohl is the village known as Krzywe Koło in the administrative district of Gmina Suchy Dąb, within Gdańsk County, Pomeranian Voivodeship, in northern Poland.) She was baptized (Protestant) 16 June 1882 in the same place. Believed to have immigrated June 1903 on the S.S. BELGRAVIA via Hamburg to Ellis Island, New York, she was headed to Syracuse to join relatives already there. She married Charles John Behnke circa 1907. She lived on Syracuse's German North Side and was the mother of 11 children. Died age 78.
Her obituary was published in The Syracuse Post-Standard, Sunday, June 4, 1961, page 33, under "Deaths"--
Mrs. Anna Behnke of 136 S. Edwards Ave. died yesterday at Syracuse General Hospital after a long illness. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. [Elsie] William Gratien of East Syracuse, Mrs. [Anna] Sidney Reed of Southwood, Mrs. [Marie] R C Fisk of Pennellville, Mrs. [Margaret] Leonard Smith of North Syracuse and Mrs. [Norma] Dominick Santy of Westvale; five sons, Charles, Edward, John, Robert and Ernest Behnke; several grand grandchildren [sic] and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. [Margaret] Bernard Huxtable and Mrs. Mary Mason, and four brothers, George, John, Carl and Fred Reschke.
She is a member of Friedens United Church of Christ.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Welter Funeral Home, the Rev. John Perl officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetry. [sic] Calling hours at the funeral home are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 today and tomorrow.
