Herman was born in Porters Mills, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin. He was the son of Louis I. Roe and Ellen Krangness.

Viking '08, St. Olaf Yearbook and Herman is a junior:

"The world belongs to the energetic"

The versatility of this man cannot be given adequate justice in so short a description as this. Whether it be to dispense melodious overtures among the inhabitants of rock-bound Norway; to divert athletic enthusiasts with his basket ball playing, or to entertain the public with his humor, in The Messenger or the miscellaneous department of this book his proficiency accomplishes it with the greatest success. Although he is an enthusiastic participant in all student enterprises, his studies do not suffer. If there is anything to be done, his motto is, "Go to it." Still his work never ruffles his good temper and genial disposition, and he is always ready to enjoy a joke, whether as its author or object.

Herman was the editor/publisher of The Northfield News for 50 years.

At the time of this yearbook, Herman lists Stanley, Wisconsin, as his residence.

Herman had another daughter, Anna Kathryn, with his second wife, Adelaide. Anna married Harold F. Hofstad September 4, 1948. Harold is memorial #82079046.
