Francis McCormick was lost in the Lady Elgin disaster. Since he is not listed in the Calvary Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin burials it is assumed his body was not recovered. His sister also died in that disaster but she is buried at Calvary Cem.

"The Lady Elgin Disaster" by Leonard Patrick "Alderman Frank McCormick, his sister, and another young lady, were separated from the rest of the passengers on a small piece of wreck that was insufficient to hold them above the water, and they soon disappeared. Being a good swimmer, McCormick might have saved himself, but he heroically gave his life in a desperate effort to save the ladies who could not swim."
