He joined the Co. K, 37th Miss. Regiment (Jasper County Guards) under Capt A. F. Dantzler, 21 Apr, 1862. Thomas is listed in Hospital during May and June of 1862. His rank was Private at the time of his death, 19 July 1862. Thomas' location was Camp Whitfield near Columbus, Miss. prior to being in the hospital in Jackson. No documentation indicating a cause of death has been located.

Thomas was buried on the old farm east of Stringer. (Jasper Co.) Samuel William Ruffin (nephew of Thomas T.) and his wife Lanie Bufkin Ruffin owned the adjoining property, including this tiny family cemetery, aka Grant Farm.
