Born north of Milaca on the family farm, the oldest of 6 kids. Bette grows to maturity in the Milaca area, graduating from Milaca H.S. in 1940. She moves to the Twin Cities to begin college, but also works to fund that effort. She marries Mel Ripke in 1944. They have one daughter. Bette first gets a teaching degree and then her Masters degree in Library Science after daughter enters grade school. Bette works as an elementary school librarian the rest of her working life. Mel and Bette divorce in 1972. Bette has a brief second marriage. After retirement, she spends much of her time traveling the world. Bette dies in 2001 at age 78.

Bette Anne Ripke, age 78, of Arden Hills passed away on August 5, 2001 at North Memorial Residential Hospice. She died peacefully with her loving daughter and two sisters by her side. Bette was born November 2, 1922, in Milaca, Minnesota. She graduated from Milaca High School in 1940 and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a master of Arts in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. She taught elementary school and was an elementary school librarian in Roseville Schools, District 623. She was a volunteer at the University of Minnesota Kerlan Library, was an active in the League of Women Voters, Great Decisions, Friends of the Library, Pi Lambda Theta and various political, arts and literary organizations. Her curiosity and sense of exploration took her on many adventures around the world from the Arctic to the Antarctic, traveling to every continent except Australia. Her international travel started with a trip to Mexico City, with her daughter on her 50th birthday. She is preceded in death by her parents, A. Henry and Anstis Anderson; and brothers, Philip and Aemer Delano Anderson. She is survived by her one daughter, , and son-in-law, and a granddaughter, all of Minneapolis; brother A. Ra Anderson of Milaca; sisters, Allyne McAllister of Plymouth and her youngest sister in Calimesa, CA; and many adoring cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 11 at the Cremation Society of MN, 7110 France Ave. S., Edina, 952-924-4100. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being accepted by the Kerlan Children's Literature Collection at the University of Minnesota, 222 21st Avenue S., Minneapolis, MN 55455.
