A lifelong resident of Frisco, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Catherine Dobson Austin and a son of John and Mrs. Empie Poyner Austin.
He was retired from the Coast Guard and had been a lighthouse keeper. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He was a member of Woodmen of the World and Little Grove United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Thomas R. Meads of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Franklin Wall of Elizabeth City; a son, Julian Haywood Austin, Jr. of Elizabeth City; a sister, Mrs. Earl Willis of Frisco and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Saturday in Little Grove United Methodist Church. Burial was in Quidley Cemetery, Buxton.
