For television, his longest running role was as Sheriff Roy Coffee on the NBC series "Bonanza", 1960 to 1972. He also was a regular in the role of Sheriff Snead for the TV series "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" 1960 to 1971, "Cheyenne" 1955 to 1962, "Maverick" 1957 to 1962 and "Lassie", 1956 to 1967. Some of his most memorable appearances in films include "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946), "Ace in the Hole" (1951), "The Desperate Hour" (1955), "Inherit the Wind" (1960), "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961) and "Chisum" (1970). He died of natural causes in Santa Monica, California, at age 74.
