The eldest child of Erwin and Anna (Cooper) Stanhope. He was born in Greenfield, Wisconsin but raised in Oceana County, Michigan. His younger sister was Marion "Mira" (b. 1867) and younger brother was Charles (b. 1870).

Elmer graduated high school in June 1884. His brother Charles died at age 19 in March 1890.

Elmer married his first cousin, Marion A. Cooper (b. 1874), the eldest daughter of his Uncle John Henry Cooper, on June 16, 1897, at the Cooper farmhouse in Greenfield, WI. The marriage cemetery was performed by their great-uncle Rev. William Wallace Johnson. The couple then lived in Hart, Michigan. They had five children, born 1900, 1906, 1909, 1911 and 1915.

Occupation: Loan Agent and farmer and also involved in the real estate business (with his sister).

His 3-year-old grandson, John Ellis, died in Jan. 1939.

His wife died in March 1939. He was cared for by his only unmarried daughter Inez Anna. But, sadly, he then suffered the loss of his Anna in Dec 1940 (at age 29). Then, in April 1941, the death of daughter Mrs. Ruth Ellis (at age 34).

Elmer died in 1947 at age 81. He was survived by his daughter Mrs. Mabel (Melville) Bates, son Elmer R. (Irma) Stanhope, and daughter Helen (George) Brousso, and also by nine grandchildren (born between 1924 and 1946). He was also survived by his sister Marion "Mira" Stanhope (who never married) and by 6 nephews and 5 nieces (born between 1924 and 1942) from his wife's side.

Michael Allen Lentz, his first great-grandchuld, was born in Aug. 1948.
