William enlisted in the Union Army and served all the years of the Civil War. He fought in battles along the Potomac, Gettysburg, Antietam and Sherman's march to the sea. Williams health was impaired by the Civil War service.
In 1876 he married Mary Coombs. They moved to Iowa, arriving in Harrison County in March of 1876. The farm was one quarter of Section Eight in Douglas Township. Mary was twenty-six and William was thirty-nine. They suffered the many hardships of pioner families --- crop failures, sickness and death.
Three of their children died in infancy.

William was at his wife's bedside when the children were born and delivered all the babies except the first and the last. He was an avid reader. His daughters said they acquired their love of reading from their father.
William died in 1903 and was remembered as a "kind and gentle" man.
