CLAIM of Nathaniel Carter
Silas Thorpe
Witness is herecalled to prove loyalty.
I am 33 years old. I reside in Fauquier Co., I am a farmer. I have known the Claimant all my life, I knew him intimately during the war, my mother's house was within 3/4 miles from the Claimant, I came home about 2 or 3 times a year, I was in the Union Army. I was with the 13th N.Y Cavalry, the 8th Illinois Reg.,Cavalry. I talked with about the causes and progress of the war, he always wished for the success of the Union Army, I never had these conversations in the presence of others. His neighbours regarded him as a Union Man, his loyal neighbours regarded him as a Union Man. I cannot say that I do know whether he contributed any money or aid to the Union Cause. Once during the War, one of the Scouts of the 8th Illinois went with me to the Claimant's house at mid-night to get information, he gave us information of a Scouting Party of Mosby's men, he told us how many there was, and their location, we took advantage of the information and attacked them successfully the next day. I never knew him to aid with money or information to the Confederate, nor to hold Confederate Bonds, I never knew him to aid their cause in any way. The information he gave me, would have prevented him from proving his loyalty to the Confederacy, had it been able to have a maintained separate look.
