A neighbor found him in downtown Colorado Spring and brought him home. He was offered to people in the neighborhood. My Grandma was living with us at the time and she took him and named him Gus. He was about 3 or 4 months old at the time.
He did not like to be in the house. If given a chance he would bolt out the door for the open roadway. I can't count the number of times we kids chased that silly dog down.
He was diffently a mutt to the full sense. He had the howl of a hound.
His nickname came from us always calling him "come on Gus" and we shortened it to "mongoose".
Gitget was the alpha of the group and she kept Gus in his place. When she died, he was lost for a while.
Gus slept in the same room as my parents. One night, he awoke my Dad because he had to go pee. Dad told him to go back to sleep since he himself was very tired and didn't wake up enough. Well, he woke up more as Gus was leaving the bedroom. Dad followed him up the stairs and caught him just as he hoosted his leg on Dad's Lazyboy chair.
Lets just say that he was known for peeing just about anyplace in the house if the mood struck him. Of all the dogs, he was the worse at doing that.
