The Passing of a Respected Citizen Occurred Last Sunday. --- Judge John K Law, Merced's oldest and best known attorney and a highly honored and respected citizen, died at his home at Twenty-third and Canal streets at 3 o'clock last Sunday morning. Death was due to paralysis with which he was stricken on the evening of November 6th of last year. He was confined to the home for several weeks after being stricken but recovered sufficiently to be about until Thanksgiving Day of this year when he again began to fail. For a few days previous to his death he seemed to be improving and the news of his passing came as a shock to his best of friends.

John Kolb Law was born in Darlington, NC on January 19, 1841. He received his early education in the schools of his native city and then entered the South Carolina Military Academy, from which institute he graduated in 1863. Her served in the Confederate Army and was severely wounded at the battle of Antietam, and being disabled from active duty in the field, he served as enrolling officer until the end of the war. He studied law in the office of his father, Judge E A Law, a leading member of the bar of that state, and was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of South Carolina in 1866. He formed a partnership with his father and continued to practice law with him until 1869 when he removed to California. Here he was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court in August 1869, he was also granted a teacher's certificate by the State Board of Education and taught successfully in the public schools of Solano and Mariposa counties until 1873 when he came to Merced and resumed the practice of law. In July 1873 he was appointed County Superintendent of Schools, serving out an unexpired term which ended March 1874. He was elected District Attorney, serving one term from March 1876 to March 1878. In 1890 he was elected Superior Judge and was re-elected in 1896, resigning in 1900 to become the attorney for the estate of the late George H Fancher.

All of these official positions Judge Law filled with honor to himself and to the satisfaction of the people. He was recognized as one of the ablest jurists in the State, and in 1902 was nominated for Chief Justice of the supreme Court, but went down to defeat with the remainder of the Democratic ticket. After resigning from the bench he continued to practice law, being associated for several years with his brother, the late T C Law, who died on August 1st of last year.

Judge Law was a high minded and public spirited man who always took an active interest in civic and political affairs, and his death is regretted by a host of friends throughout the State.

In 1866 Judge Law was married in South Carolina to Miss Mary L James who survives.

Funeral services were held at the Central Presbyterian church on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and were conducted by Rev George B Greig of Berkeley and Rev Henry T Babcock of Merced. A large gathering of friends and acquaintances assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased and there was a profusion of floral offerings. Internment was made in the family plot in the Masonic cemetery.
