Willie Gholson, wife of Thomas Warters

Willie Mae Gholson was one of eight children borne of the union of William Carroll (1837-1906) and Sarah Ann (Dodson) Gholson (1842-1923) on April 13th, 1873 at LaGrange, Lenoir County, North Carolina. While living there with her parents, who were farmers at the time, she met Thomas Lassiter Warters, a native of North Carolina, b.March 27, 1863. The young couple fell very much in love and were married at her parents' new home of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio on April 22nd, 1895. The happy couple then relocated to Rome, Floyd Co., Georgia where Thomas had a tobacco farm he had inherited from his aunt and uncle who had raised him. He was owner and operator of Thomas Warters Cigars which produced fine quality cigars. Willie and Tom were blessed with five daughters and one son. They were:
Ruth, b. 29 Feb 1896
Agnes, b. 22 Mar 1898
Lucy Jane, b. 8 Jun 1900 [named after his aunt]
Mary, b. 18 Oct 1902
Thomas, b. 3 Nov 1905 and
Willie Louise, b. 3 Feb 1908.[named after her mother]
All six children lived to adulthood and all attended and graduated from Shorter College, now Shorter University, except for Willie Louise who, sadly, was involved in a streetcar accident while growing up. She began having seizures due to head trauma and her parents cared for her until they were unable to, due to their advanced ages. Willie Louise was then placed in the best care facility in the area where she would remain until her death at the age of 73 yrs. in Oct 1981. Ruth, who had earned her teaching degree, married Robert Leon Webb. Agnes also married, to Adolphus Hayden Little. Lucy Jane and Mary chose not to marry; both went on to receive their doctorates. (Lucy) Jane became a Psychology Professor at UCLA and Mary, who majored in Biology and Genetics, became a Professor at Centenary College in Louisiana. Thomas received his degree in Accounting and married Bernice Donnell. After 43 years of being happily married, Willie's beloved husband passed away on May 3rd, 1938. His grieving widow and children buried him at Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange, Lenoir Co., North Carolina. Willie Mae grieved for her lost husband and passed away herself on July 1st, 1838, less than two months later. Her children mourned their mother's loss as they buried her by her dear husband at Fairview Cemetery in LaGrange, North Carolina. All six of their children have since passed from this life. I know they are together in Paradise, forever.
