Colonel Algernon S. Reaves, veteran of the Civil War and the Spanish-American war, and a close personal friend of Presidents McKinley and Roosevelt, died at a hospital here early today. He was 86 years old old. During the civil war Colonel Reaves commanded one of the famous Confederate regiments, the 13th Alabama, which led the charge at Gettysburg. He was twice wounded during the four year strife. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he took command of the Third United States volunteers, at the request of President McKinley. During this time he became a close personal friend of Col. Roosevelt. He is survived by two sons, W. Hart Reaves who was at his bedside and Algernon S. Reaves Jr. of Frederick, Oklahoma. The body will be taken to Hartsville, Tenn., his old home for burial.

This distinguished citizen and soldier was born and reared in Wedowee, Randolph county, Alabama. He was a brother of the late Judge S.E.A. Reaves. The remains were carried to Hartsville, Tennessee for interment, from the Army hospital where he chose to spend his last days.
