Gottlieb Heyne was born on September 19, 1886, in Neudorf, Glueckstal, Tiraspol, Odessa, South Russia (now Moldova), to George and Kristina [Dockter] Heyne. His siblings were: Kristina, born 1882; Karolina, born 1890; Paulina, born 1895; Katharina, born 1896; and Aaugust, born 1899.

In March of 1909, he married Julianna Wiederrich [Wiedrich] in Hosmer, South Dakota. They had five children: Edwin, born about 1911; Arthur, born 1912; Edward, born about 1914; Alma, born about 1916; and Martha, born about 1918. They farmed and raised their family in Edmunds County. Gottlieb died June 6, 1945 and is buried in Morningside Cemetery, in Roscoe.
