Revolutionary War soldier.

Born "Johann Franz Kettering" in Germany, Francis came to Philadelphia in 1860, aboard the ship "Chance". He, along with his sons Peter and Philip, were signers of the Cumberland Compact. He was a soldier in the American Revolution, according to the marker placed on his grave by the Jethro Sumner Chapter of the DAR.

Francis Ketring donated land in the vicinity of Shackle Island (a small community north of Fort Nashborough, now Nashville) for the cemetery which is adjacent to the Beech Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

The Beech Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which was organized in 1798, is said to be one of the oldest churches in Middle Tennessee. There are supposed to be 17 grave markers in the Beech Presbyterian Church bearing the Ketring name".
