Note: Some sources list him as a Colonel. However, I have yet to find any such military record. Until this is documented, I will not use a military rank for his title. He would have been too young for the war of 1812, and too old for the Civil War. The Mexican American War (1846-48) is another long shot. (Perhaps some were confusing him with his Grandfather who was a Lieutenant with the same first name, or his great grandfather who had the name Chad, but was a Colonel.)

My sources about Ezekiel are from some DAR information, misc online websites, and a Chad Brown genealogy source. Here is more about that last source...

There is a book named "The Chad Browne Memorial Consisting of Genealogical Memoirs of a portion of the Descendants of Chad & Elizabeth Browne with an Apendix Containing Sketches of Other Early Rhode Island Settlers 1638-1888" Compiled by a descendant. (This author states in his preface that this was meant to supplement a 16 page pamphlet entitled "Genealogy of a Portion of the Brown Family" compiled by Henry Truman Beckwith and printed in Princeton, R.I by Hugh H. Brown in 1851.)
'''
Starting on page 122, the section is titled "A Partial History of James, Jeremiah, and Daniel Brown, the Three Youngest sons of Chad & Elizabeth Brown, and a portion of their descendants." On page 125 it starts the genealogy of Daniel Brown who is the 5th son of Chad & Elizabeth.
I find this section a bit confusing. The first few generations are ok to follow. Daniel married an Alice Hearnden daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (White) Hearnden. Daniel & Alice's 6th child was Hosanna Brown who married Mary Hawkins the daughter of John & Sarah Hawkins and the granddaughter of William & Margaret Hawkins. Hosanna and Mary had two children: daughter Mary who married David Burlingame and son Othniel. The wife of Othniel is not mentioned, but it simply says that Othniel was the father of Col. Chad Brown. It then goes into more detail about Col. Chad, and that he married Zerviah Evans. Their oldest child was Ezekiel ( born 11-Oct-1749) who married Ruth Winsor daughter of John and Mary (Smith) Winsor. At this point it gets a bit confusing. First, I think This Ezekiel was Lieut. Ezekiel Brown. Nevertheless, it mentions he and Ruth had two sons: John & Chad. It then goes on to discuss about the children of John, but there is no mention of the children of this Chad. The children of John (wife's name not given) were John, Chad, Ezekiel. He said they move to New York and established a wholesale grocery business. It also mentions two of John's daughters: Ruth & Sarah.

We trace this Ezekiel to being the son of Chad -- not John. It is there were the confusion lies. Chad and his wife Elizabeth Healy are not mentioned nor the fact that they moved to New York soon after marrying in 1800.

Note: I would say that because Ezekiel's ancestry is listed in the DAR, it seems appropriate. However, this Brown genealogy site does make one wish for clarification between the two sons (John & Chad) of Lieut. Ezekiel Brown and Ruth Winsor).

Note: Ezekiel's parents were Chad & Elizabeth (Healy) Brown. (Note: Elizabeth's dad was Sgt. John Healy, a Revolutionary War patriot. Likewise, Chad's father and grandfather were also Revolutionary War patriots too: Lieut. Ezekiel Brown, and Col. Chad Brown respectively. Thus any descendants of Ezekiel Brown may apply for membership in the DAR or SAR (Daughters/Sons of the American Revolution).

Nevertheless, it appears that Ezekiel Brown is the eight generation of Browns that traces back to Chad & Elizabeth Brown who sailed from England to Massachusetts aboard the ship Martin that arrived in Boston in July of 1638. That same year he moved to Rhode Island which implies that he did not share the religious views of the Mass. settlers.

Ezekiel8's male ancestry is:
(Chad7, Lieut. Ezekiel6, Col. Chad5, Othniel4, Hosanna3, Daniel2, Chad1).

Now for info on Ezekiel8's early years:

Chad & Elizabeth Brown married in 1800 in Dudley, Worcester Co, Mass. Ezekiel was born in 1801. Online sources say he was born in Eaton, Madison County, New York where his parents eventually settled. However, all his census data state born in Mass. My guess is that he really was born in Mass, and that they moved to New York during his youth. Until I hear otherwise, I'm going to set his birth to Dudley, Worcester, Mass.

Though Ezekiel & Cornelia's daughter (my ancestor) Dolly A. (Brown) Fountain did not move to southeast Kansas, it appears that the rest of the family did move there.

The Keyes genealogy book mentions 9 children for Ezekiel & Cornelia Bush (Keyes) Brown, but I have only found 8. Of those eight, six were in the home in the 1850 census in Ridott, Stephenson County, Illinois. Missing were Elizabeth & Adaline. Elizabeth was married and also living in Ridott. Adaline was married and living 11 miles away in the next county in Seward, Winnebago County, Illinois. So far I have had no luck finding the 9th child.

Here the eight known children of Ezekiel & Cornelia Bush (Keyes) Brown (of which only two have unknown deaths and grave locations) (Because two of them do not appear in federal censuses after 1850, I suspect that they may have died while they still lived in Illinois -- probably still in Stephens County, IL.):

1) Theodore (1828 - ____)
(He last appeared as a 22 yo
in the 1850 census. Note, that the)

name appears very faint in the record.)
2) Henry B.
3) Adaline L. (Brown) Vance
4) Elizabeth S. Brown Cole
5) Persis (1836 - ____)
(last appeared as a 14 yo
     in the 1850 census.
Online references said she died young.)

6) Dolly A. Brown Fountain
7) Israel Keyes
8) Chad

The first Brown in this line who came to America in 1638:
NOTE: He and his wife were originally buried in their orchard. The Brown genealogy book claims that later they were both moved and the monument referenced below was meant for both of them...
   Chad Brown

Note that this first American ancestor, Chad Brown, was one of the founders of the town of Providence, Rhode Island. He is also considered one of the founders of the Baptist church in America. There is a wiki entry for him if you wish to read more. Furthermore, this Brown family is the family for which Brown University in Providence is named after. (Note the University connection is via descendants of Chad Brown's oldest son, John. Ezekiel's line goes back through Chad's son, Daniel.)

Now as for the history of migration for Ezekiel's family: Ezekiel's parents were married and lived their first few years in Dudley, Worcester Co., Mass. At some point they moved to Eaton, Madison Co. NY. Ezekiel & Cornelia married on 26-Oct-1826 in Eaton, Madison Co., NY. Their children Theodore, Henry B, Adaline L., and Elizabeth S were born in New York. Then they moved to Indiana and their daughters Persis and Dolly A were born there. Then they moved to Ridott, Stephenson Co, ILL. Their sons Israel Keyes & Chad were born in Illinois.

Kansas voting records for Marion Township, Bourbon County indicate that E. Brown had moved to that area in July of 1858.
Note: Some sources list him as a Colonel. However, I have yet to find any such military record. Until this is documented, I will not use a military rank for his title.
