Thelma Hughes Aitkens of Jesup, Georgia, died June 4, 2017, at the age of 95. She was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Grady Garland Hughes and Della Anne Blakeley. She attended Arkansas A&M for two years prior to her marriage in 1942 to John Lorry Aitkens (Larry) of Houma, Louisiana. At the time Larry passed away on May 10, 2015, Thelma and Larry had been married 72 years and had been recognized by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter as the longest married couple in Georgia. They built and moved into their home at 188 Shirley Lane in Jesup, Georgia, in 1957 and resided there together for over 58 years. She loved her friends in the Harper Street/Elm Street neighborhood and participated in many of the community events at the Cracker Williams Recreation Center. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother of three, Thelma was active in home, church, and community, always doing for others. She loved to sew, cook, golf, play bridge, arrange flowers, and socialize with her many friends. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Joy Class, Church Circle 2, Pine Forest Country Club, and Jesup Garden Club. In her younger years, Thelma was a Pink Lady at Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Thelma is survived by son John L. Aitkens, Jr. (Martha) of Athens, GA, daughter Nancy Aitkens Hodge (Joseph) of Milledgeville, GA, and son Robert G. Aitkens (Terri) of Sandy Springs, GA. She is also survived by her granddaughter Jennifer Lori Hodge Schweller (Russell) of Charlottesville, VA, grandson Robert Stewart Aitkens (Ashley) of Alpharetta, GA, granddaughter Teresa Aitkens Cloud (Eric) of Perry, GA, and two grandsons and one granddaughter of Sandy Springs, GA - Robert Kamper Aitkens, William Thomas Aitkens, and Lorry Elizabeth Aitkens - the children of Robert G. and Terri Aitkens. Other survivors are five great grandchildren - Leah Clare Schweller, Elias Joseph Schweller, Sydney Cheyenne Aitkens, Ally Logan Aitkens, and Veronica Lancaster Cloud. She is also survived by two nieces – Ann Williamson, Hot Springs, AR, and Connie Skinner, Alexander, AR. She was a resident of Arbor Terrace Assisted Living of Athens for the last year and a half, and during her last few years she was nursed by a number of devoted caregivers in both Jesup and Athens. She was always appreciative of their care and attention, as were her children.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, at the First United Methodist Church in Jesup, with Pastor Tucker Lewis officiating. A reception will follow in the Church’s Fellowship Hall.
