She was the daughter of Bryant and Rosamond Wyatt Rose, of Camp Creek. Her father and mother had sisters named Nancy, possibly she was named for an aunt. Several of her brothers were also residents of Mercer county; her brother Richard was a resident of Summers county.

She married Lewis C. Shrewsbury on 18 April 1872, in Mercer county. She was nineteen years old (as written) and the marriage performed by Charles Walker.

The 1880 Mercer county census lists the family at Jumping Branch District - Lewis 32, Nancy 22 (?), Robert L./ male - 7, Freeland C./ male - 5, Ransey E./ female - 4, Mary L./ female - 2, Cisaro/ male - 4 months.

The 1900 census gives birthdate for Lewis, 1848/age 52; Nancy, June 1852/age 47; Mary L., May 1878/age 22; Cicero E., Jan 1880/age 20; James B., Jan 1884, age 16; Lewis E, Mar 1889.

Lewis preceded her in death, his death record gives his occupation as "retired farmer"; married, aged 75y, 2m, 12d,
died 9 Feb 1924, Princeton.

"Lewis "Cass" Shrewsbury,
son of James Shrewsbury (d. 1875, Mercer county), was born in Mercer county, West Virginia. He attended the schools of his native county, and at an early age began his mercantile career as a clerk in a store. After a few years service he removed to Beckley. He has met with marked success in his business ventures.

In politics he is a Democrat and has held several offices, serving a number of years as justice of the peace.
He married Nancy Rose, a native of Virginia, daughter of Bryant Rose, who served during the civil war in the Confederate army."
