Abraham Lobaugh was born on __________ __, 182__ (c. 1823) in ___________, Pennsylvania in Adams County. Abraham was the son of Joseph Lobach (Lobaugh) and Eliza (or Elizabeth) (__________) Lobach. Joseph Lobach, the son of Andrew Lobach (1751 - 1818) and Eva (Knisely) Lobach (1757 - 1839), was born c. July 13, 1787 in __________, Pennsylvania and died on Oct. 6, 1828 when Abraham was about 5 years of age. Joseph's mortal remains were laid to rest in the Lobach-Bushey Cemetery in Latimore, Adams County, Pennsylvania. In the late 1840's, at least some of the Lobaugh family removed to Illinois, where they settled in Peoria County.
Abraham was married first to Jane Brockman on June __, 1849 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Jane died on December __, 1853 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, just over four years after they were married. At least one son was born to Abraham and Jane. He was;
1. John B. Lobaugh, born December 25, 1850 in Pennsylvania. John was married to Elizabeth Isabel DuBois c. 1879/80. At the time of the 1900 census John and Lizzie are found in Tioga Township (excl. Chanute cit), Neosho County, Kansas. They have been married 20 years and have had seven children, all of whom are living at this time;

John died on May 11, 1924 in Oilton, Creek County, Oklahoma; John was married to Elizabeth Isabelle (DuBois) Lobaugh; John was buried in the Fairview Cemetery, Cherryvale, Montgomery County, Kansas.

Abraham was married 2nd to Isabel __________ on January __, 1854 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. Isabel was born on __________ __, 1831 (c. 1830/31) in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.
Six children are believed to have been born to Abraham and Isabel. They are;
2. Elizabeth "Eliza" A. Lobaugh, born c. 1854/55 in Illinois. In May of 1880, Elizabeth Lobaugh is believed to have been sent to the State Hospital asylum in Osawatomie, Kansas. On October 17, 1884 the following notice appeared in the Iola Register;
"Frances Pike and Mrs. Elizabeth A. Lobaugh, Allen county inmates of the Osawatomie insane asylum, died last week."

Elizabeth Lobaugh is believed to have been deceased by 1898, if this is not her.

3. William R. Lobaugh, born October 28, 1855 in Peoria County, Illinois. William was married to Lettie/Letty/Lety Bailey on February 16, 1879 in Allen County, Kansas. Letty was born on January __, 1861 in ____________, Wisconsin. At the time of the 1880 census, William is found farming in Salem, Allen County, Kansas;

William died on Feb. 24, 1937 and his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Saint Joseph Cemetery in Humboldt, Allen County, Kansas.

4. Joseph T. Lobaugh, born June 23, 1857 in Peoria County, Illinois. Joseph died on October 25, 1860 in Peoria County and his mortal remains were laid in the Smithville Cemetery in Hanna City, Peoria County, Illinois. See his Find A Grave Memorial# 89891709.

5. Mary M. Lobaugh, born December __, 1859 in Peoria County, Illinois. Mary was married to Ira A. Bailey (1857 - 1939) on July 20, 1879 in Allen County, Kansas. Mary M. (Lobaugh) Bailey died on ____________ __, 1932 in ___________, Kansas and her mortal remains were laid in the Elm Grove Cadmus Cemetery in Cadmus, Linn County, Kansas. 6. Emma Jane Lobaugh, born July 15, 1861 in Peoria, Illinois. Emma married Henry L. Cordrey in Allen county, Kansas on September 27, 1876. They had two children;

Emma Jane died on January 31, 1894 in Des Moines, Iowa; buried in the Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union, Henry County, Iowa.

7. Martha L. Lobaugh, born January 9, 1863 in Peoria, Illinois. Martha died July 14, 1863 in Peoria, Illinois and her mortal remains were laid in the Smithville Cemetery in Hanna City, Peoria County, Illinois.

Abraham and Isabel came west with his young son, John, to Illinois sometime between 1851 and 1855, where they settled in Trivoli Township in Peoria County. There at least five of their six known children were born to them. Abraham farmed the land for a living. They are found there in Trivoli Township at the time of the 1860 census of Peoria County, although his name is incorrectly listed in the typed copy as LABAUGH;

On the morning of August 15th, 1862, 39 year old Abraham Lobaugh volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S. Bean for service in the Union Army. Abraham lists Trivoli as his place of residence at the time he volunteered.

That afternoon, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private Abraham Lobaugh, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Three weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come.
During the next two and a half years, Private Abraham Lobaugh served in the army as the men of the 86th served in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. At some point during the latter half of the war, his age and the living conditions are believed to have finally caught up with him. Many younger thousands of younger men didn't last as long as he did, but at some point, it is believed that Private Abraham Lobaugh was sent to the rear and the Army Hospitals up north. One of his 3rd Great Granddaughters, Jeanette Dickinson, has records that state that Abraham became ill in February, 1863, while serving in Nashville, Tennessee and suffered chronic diarrhea from them on. The men of the 86th were participants in numerous battles and skirmishes, some of the bloodiest fighting in the Western Theatre of the war, including some or all of the following, the Battles of Chicakamauga, Georgia; Resaca, Georgia; Rome, Georgia, Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia; Peach Tree Creek, Georgia; Jonesboro, Georgia; Averysboro, North Carolina; and Bentonville, North Carolina, to name a few and marched with Sherman to the Sea. But, it is not known if Abraham was healthy enough to be with the 86th during any of these battles. At some point his ailment is known to have forced him to be left behind and he was sent back north and Abraham was never able to rejoin the 86th, but it is not known at what point in the war he left the 86th for good. He may very well have never gone south with the 86th from Nashville in the late summer of 1863. While the surviving members of the 86th were marching down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. on the 2nd day of the Grand Review, Private Abraham Lobaugh was sick in a Army Hospital, most likely in Madison, Indiana. What remained of the 86th were mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 and they were soon headed for Chicago and then home. With the war now over, Private Abraham Lobaugh finally was healthy enough to be discharged and on June 13, 1865, 42 year old Private Abraham Lobaugh was discharged from the service at Madison, Indiana, after having served his country in uniform for nearly three years and he was soon back home with his family in Peoria County.
Abraham and Isabel, however, did not remain in Peoria County long as the Government was giving veterans land in Kansas for their service and Abraham, Isabel and their family were soon headed there. Abraham and Isabel moved to Kansas in the spring of 1866 and lived in Humboldt, KS.

According to his pension records, in 1898 Abraham had three living children, John B., William R., and Mary M. Lobaugh.
Private Abraham Lobaugh died on __________ __, 1900 in Allen County, Kansas. I found one record that stated that his earthly remains were laid to rest in the Elmwood Cemetery at Chanute, Kansas in Neosho County. But, a Find A Grave researcher checked with the cemetery office and reported "The Cemetery office has no record of this person." But, it is now known that Private Abraham Lobaugh is buried in Block 8, Lot 15,Space 2 old addition Elmwood Cemetery, Chanute, KS. It is not known when Isabel died at this time.

According the the card that is on file that can be seen on familysearch, that card that was used to order his government tombstone, states that he died on March 17, 1899.
