Jacob (Jakob) was the son of Franz Zentz/Zens (1759-1820) and Anna Katharina Raber (1772-1815) - one of 14 children. He was the grandson of Michael Zens (1735-1774) and Maria Margarethe Pfieffer; and of Ferdinand Raber (1749-1816) and Elisabeth Holzer ( -1885).

Jacob was a coal miner and probably worked in a mine managed by his father in Merchweiler, Saarland, Germany. On 19 Jan 1820 he married Elisabeth Sehn (2 Apr 1798-1880+) in the village of Illingen at St. Stephanus RC Church. She was the daughter of Peter Sehn and Catharina Steinert.

In 1837 he and his family immigrated to America, with their seven children. Caroline was born at sea before their arrival in Philadelphia. After initially settling in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, they relocated, before 1850, to 1,000 acres of land they purchased in the Nippenose Valley - in Limestone Township of Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The area, which became known as Zentz Gap, was hilly and hard to farm.

Both Jacob and Elisabeth are believed to be buried in a family gravesite at this location, which is east of Collomsville, PA. Approx. GPS: 41.135, -77.113.

Their children were:
Conrad Zintz (1821-1881),
Casper Sents (1823-1900),
Betty (Catharina) Sents (1825- ),
Jacob Sents, Jr. (1827- ),
Mary (Anna Maria) Sents (1830- ),
Adam Cence (1832 -),
Franklin/Frank (Franz) Sentz (1835- ),
Caroline Sents (1837- ).
