Patriarch of the Ninth Oldest of Ten Early Crago/Craigo Families in America

Thomas Crago was born in December of 1811, somewhere in, Ohio, believed to be in or near present-day Vinton County. He moved to the Lake Twp., Wood Co., Ohio area (then Troy Twp.) about 1835, where he seems to have been working for Samuel Waggoner. He married Sam's daughter, Sally Waggoner, in Bowling Green in 1838. They raised ten children, and have many descendants today (more than 1300 people were identified by the 1940's, when the last of their family reunions were held).

Thomas was elected Lake Township, Wood Co, OH Treasurer from 1845 until 1858, and then a Lake Twp trustee between 1859 and 1869. He died in 1870 in Wood Co, but was buried in the nearest functioning cemetery of the time, in Woodville, Sandusky County, OH.

Be sure to read more about the Crago's of the World, and our current efforts to trace their family lines using DNA Analysis, by going to the Crago One-Name Study website for Crago's, Craigo's and Crego's .

While we don't know with certainty the identity of Thomas Crago's parents at this time, we know that the Crago's of Wood County, Ohio share a common paternal DNA pattern with the Thomas Crago (b.1726?) descendants of Greene Co., Pennsylvania origin, and the descendants of Thomas (aka James?) Crago of Jackson/Vinton County, Ohio. The DNA profile of this Wood Co., Ohio Thomas Crago is now known.

Other Crago, Craigo and Craig's have a very similar DNA profile but these seem to be a bit further removed genetically. One of those with very similar yDNA are the South Dakota Crago's who trace their ancestry, with certainty, to Liskeard in Cornwall, England.

The most likely scenario seems to be that this Thomas Crago was a grandson of James Crago, the brother of Thomas Crago b.1759 of Greene Co., PA. That relationship, if true, would make this Thomas Crago a, great-grandson, therefore, of the Thomas Crago (b. 1723?) killed by Indians in 1771 in Greene Co, Pennsylvania.

It is believed that James Crago moved with his family to a large area known at the time as Washington Co., OH between 1790 and 1800, perhaps in the company of John Crawford, to whom he was indentured after the death of James' father in 1771. There is a reference to a James Crage/Crago (handwriting is not clear) and a neighbor Samuel Crawford in Newtown, Washington County, Territory Northwest of the Ohio River, in an 1800 Census of Males over 21 years of age.

We're not certain of the name of James Crago's one known son, listed only as a male under age 16 in the 1790 census of Washington County, PA. I often refer to this unnamed son of James Crago as "John" Crago. This is a guess, however, based on the fact that Thomas b.1811 named his oldest son John.
