Mrs. Schmitz was born February 2, 1890 in the town of New Holstein, daughter of John and Frances Herzog Mertens. She attended St. Anne Parochial School in New Holstein. On May 29, 1922 she married Edwin M. Schmitz in St. Anna. Mr. Schmitz died May 2, 1976. Mrs. Schmitz was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein and its Christian Mothers Society.
She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Willard (Frances) Ninmer, Mrs. Jerome (Helen) Reinl and Miss Marion Schmitz, all of New Holstein; Mrs. Carl (Margaret) Gebhart, Route 2, Chilton; Mrs. Gregory (Genrose) Schwarz, Route 1, New Holstein, and Mrs. Melvin (Agnes) Hanke, Route 1, Kiel; a brother, Joseph Mertens of Kiel; 23 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was offered Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church by the Rev. Ralph Hermsen. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
