Rufena Lucero y Fernández was born to Pedro Antonio Lucero and Maria de la Luz Fernández, both natives of Mora, Nuevo México, México. She came to Alta California, México, with her family in 1841. Rufena was the sister of Juana María Lucero y Fernández, who married William Henry Gordon, who at the time was a resident at Cache Creek. Rufena married Cyrus Alexander at Sutter's Fort, México, in December 1844, with "Captain" Johann Sutter officiating.
