James Franklin "Jim" Day was born February 15, 1920, in the Henderson Mounds Community of New Madrid County, Missouri. He was the sixth child of John Henry Day and Rhoda Lee (Cooper) Day . He had four brothers; Johny, Henry, Charlie and Calvin; two sisters; Eugenia and Ethello. He lived most of his life in rural Mississippi County.

In 1943, Jim Day joined the U.S. Army. He fought in World War II. By 1947 he married Gerline Ratliff in East Prairie, MO. They had two daughters, Linda and Brenda and a son named Robbie Day.

On January 11, 1973, Jim remarried to Mildred Barker. They were residents of Morehouse, Missouri and members of a Baptist Church. Jim had had one step-daughter named Betty Sue Scott, a resident of Crawfordville, Indiana and two step-sons, Roger L. Barker and Don Matthews of Brooksville, Florida.

At the age of 59, James Franklin Day died. His passing was on a Thursday, January 10, 1980 at 12.30 p.m., at the John Cochran Veterans Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri after an extended illness. He was buried in Dogwood Cemetery in East Prairie, Missouri.
