At the age of 59, James Franklin Day died. His passing was on a Thursday, January 10, 1980 at 12.30 p.m., at the John Cochran Veterans Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri after an extended illness. He was buried in Dogwood Cemetery in East Prairie, Missouri.
