Rhoda Lee Day, a resident of Matthews, Rt. 1, passed away Saturday, June 19, 1971 at 11:30 p.m. in the Host House, Charleston. She lived to the age of 86 years, 4 months, 23 days old.

Born on January 27, 1885 in Mississippi County, Missouri, Rhoda was the the daughter of Duncan Cooper and Virginia Louisana Zilafro. Rhoda never met her father. He died just months before her birth. According to Rhoda, her father Duncan was murdered at a local voting poll while her mother was pregnant with her. No death records or further information has been found for Duncan, but this story is very well know amongst Rhoda's family. Her mother eventually remarried a man named Richard "Dick" Humphrey. He was described as a "kind man".

On April 16, 1904 in Cairo, Illinois, Rhoda Lee Cooper was united in marriage to John Henry Day. He preceded her in death on August 17, 1936.

Survivors are two daughters: Mrs. William (Ethel) Simpkins of Hammond, Indiana and Mrs. Harley (Eugenia) Pritchett of Matthews; four sons, Henry Day, James Day , and Calvin Day, all of Matthews and Charles Day of Hammond, Indiana; 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and many friends.

Rhoda was preceded in death, two sons; Johnny Lee Day and Earl B. Day, two sisters; Lena (Cooper) Singleton and Annie Davis, a half sister, Rose (Humphrey) Drury and two half brothers; James and Arthur "Lee" Humphrey. She had resideded in New Madrid County and near Matthews most of her life. She was a member of the Church of God of East Prairie.

The body lay in state at the Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie where funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 22, 1971 at 2:00 p.m. in the Shelby Chapel with Rev. J. L. Hatchel officiating. Interment followed in Dogwood Cemetery with Shelby Funeral Home of East Praieie in charge of arrangments.
