Born c.1753, 24-year-old Caleb Baldwin, who fought for American independence, did not live to see his country free itself from British rule. The Continental soldier's gravestone was made by the "Roman Haircut Carver", an unidentified craftsman active in the 1770's whose work features high-relief soul effigies with hair combed forward.
Caleb Baldwin is also named on the D.A.R. Monument in the churchyard of the First presbyterian Church of Orange, NJ. Dedicated in 1931, it honors Revolutionary War veterans buried here.
