Anthony was born in Philadelphia in 1850; He was the eldest son of Louis Scharff, Proprietor of the L Scharff Spring Mill Terra Cotta Works, Established in 1856.
About 1874 Anthony took over the operations of the business from his father Louis. The name at that time was Anthony Scharff & Bros. Spring Mill Pottery and Terra Cotta Works. The Terra Cotta Works thrived until abt 1910 when Anthony closed the Business.
Anthony married Amelia Tschan in 1877 in Philadelphia. They were blessed with eight children: Joseph, Anthony Jr., Louis H, Martha, John, Francis, Marie, & Amelia E.
They lived in Spring Mill their entire married life and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1927. A year later in 1928 Amelia died in January and Anthony followed four months later in May of the same year.
