Gertrude was the only surviving child of her parents. Her father died when she was one month old. When she was a small child she fell off of a bench, causing brain damage. Gertrude lived with her mother and grandparents until she was in her teens, when she was taken to the state hospital in Milledgeville. She lived the rest of her life there.
