Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, Granville Irving Leavitt, her parents, nine (9) brothers, William, Francis, Albert, Richard, Martin, Bert, James, George and Douglas, one (1) sister Lillian Powning, and her daughter Nancy Lynn Alberti. She is survived by her grandson Patton (Julie) Alberti, grand-daughters Shera (Dan) Alberti-Annunzio and Kara (Ron) Maddox, great-granddaughter Jessica Maddox, step great-grandchildren Isaiah Annunzio and Amy (Julian) Jacinto, 3 step-great-great grandchildren (Tehya, Carmilee, Malakai) her sister in law Florence Canonic (Bert), as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She married Granville in Yerington, Nevada on November 25, 1931. Granville and Ruby travelled the world while Gran was a Captain in the U.S. Army. His services took them to many countries and during that time Ruby taught in Seoul, South Korea and Vienna, Austria. Ruby attended the University of Nevada and received a lifetime teaching certificate from the State of Nevada. She taught in many locations in Nevada, retiring from Verdi Elementary School in 1974 after a career spanning more than 30 years as a Teacher and Principal.
Ruby joined the Crystal Rebekah Lodge #32 in December 1954 where she held the office of Past Noble Grand and Past District Deputy President. She joined the Nevada Rebekah Lodge #7 on April 16 1991. Ruby was awarded her Chivalry jewel and her 50 year jewel.
After retiring, Ruby volunteered well into her 90's. She served as a Washoe Medical Center Senior Volunteer; taught defensive driving classes for the AARP 55 Alive driver education program; collected glasses for the Lions Club eye glass assistance program; and in the library, classroom and as a tutor, with Hunter Lake Elementary school while her great-granddaughter was a student.
Ruby was a true gift to all who knew her and will be missed greatly. She never stopped enjoying her friends and family, and up to recently attended monthly lunches with her lunch lady friends. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend.
A celebration of Ruby's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 11, 2011 at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Ave., Reno. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in her name be made to the Verdi Elementary School Library, P.O. Box 309; Verdi, NV 89439.
