"The LaFayette Sun" - March 6, 1907:

Mrs. Slaughter is Dead.

On last Wednesday morning at 9:30 o'clock, the spirit of Mrs. Caroline Missouri Slaughter took its flight into the great beyond. Her death was not altogether a surprise to her relatives and friends, as she was in her 88th year, and had been fast failing in health for several years. She was at the home of her son, Mr. S. W. Alford at the time of her death, and was interred at Bethel cemetery on Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Slaughter was born in Putnam County, Georgia, June 10th, 1819. While quite young, she attached herself to the Methodist church of which she was ever after a faithful member. She was married twice in life, in 1838 to Mr. S. W. Alford, Sr., and in 1860 to Mr. Lawson Slaughter, both of whom she has survived many years. The last 22 years of her life were spent among the good people of Chambers County. Two brothers, W. H. and G. P. Cotton, and one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Jones are still living. She also leaves three sons and a large number of grandchildren to mourn her loss. The family wishes to extend thanks to their friends and relatives for the kind attentions shown them during her illness.

Mrs. Slaughter, better known as "Grandma", is now numbered among the departed. But although her voice is hushed in death, yet she speaks. Though her footsteps are no longer heard and her body lies moldering in the grave, yet she is not gone. She lives now, more truly than before she was laid to est. There still lingers in the hearts of bereaved relatives and friends sweet though melancholy remembrances of the departed loved one.

Sleep, gentle one, from care relieved

Sweet be thy peaceful slumbers;

Thou leav'st on earth, loved ones bereaved,

To join Heaven's countless numbers.

We cherish still thy image dear

Though thou art gone forever,

In memory's casket still we wear

Those ties which Time can't sever

And though we'd see they face no more

Among us here to stay

Yet we shall know thee as before

In one sweet happy day.

- Robert L. Burkes.
