Elias (who was probably named in honor of his granduncle) was most likely born in Henry County, where he spent much of his childhood, to Martha (Drewer) and Jeremiah Lee.

His older brother Smith and his father Jeremiah both died before Elias reached the age of 9 months. His mother Martha went on to remarry when Elias was 8, he immediately gained some step brothers and sisters which were followed by half brothers and sisters.

When Elias was 15 he was living with his maternal aunt and uncle where he went to school and did farm labor.

At the age of 22 he married Rachel Jennie Prickett. (They are second cousins as his paternal grandparents and her maternal grandparents are the same people.)

They had five children, Nora, Guy, Sadoras, Frank and Hugh; only three of whom survived to adulthood. Sometime after 1885 the family moved to Pleasant Ridge Township in Lee County, Iowa.

In 1906 while visiting his mother he was stricken with paralysis; little hope was given for his recovery and his condition was so serious that he was not moved from the house. He passed away one week later.

Elias was also a member of the Masons of Lowell, Iowa.
