Artist. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, he was an early 20th Century artist best known for his modern abstract landscapes and watercolor art work. Educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, he spent some time in Europe, returning to America in 1911 and began annual exhibitions at Stieglitz's Gallery 291 in New York City. His first retrospective show was held at Daniel Gallery in New York in 1920 and for the next 30 years, he achieved critical success and International recognition for his calligraphic lines, luminous colors and ability to hint at the fleeting essence of the subject matter in his art. He died of a stroke at age 82 at his retreat in Cape Split, Maine.
