John is the son of Jacob Steele and husband of Lucy A. Hannigan. John's birth date is really 1877. He is on the 1880 Census with his parents and is 2 years old at the time. He also states on his WWI Draft Card that his birth date is July 6, 1877. Not sure why there is an error in his age at death. John was also born John W. Steele. When he married Lucy Hannigan, he became Catholic and changed his middle name to Joseph.
