Edwin T. Newell, 71, of 18 Eighth St., Oneonta, died Friday, Feb. 19, Binghamton General Hospital.

He was born April 30, 1910, in Kerstetter, West Virginia, the son of Theodore D. and Bertha (Stone) Newell. He married Mary R. White June 17, 1939 in Endicott.

He was an engineer for the D&H Railroad for 33 years, retiring in 1975. He had been a resident of Oneonta since 1925.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, the United Transportation Union, and Oneonta Lodge No. 466 F&AM.

He is survived by a wife; a son, Bruce of R.D. 2, Oneonta; two daughters, Mrs. Donna Farr, Oneonta,, and Mrs. Sandra White, Lansing; a brother, Wilbur R. of Oneonta; two sisters, Mrs. Douglas (Hazel) Sullivan, Unadilla; Mrs. Irene LeVoy, Ocala, Fla.; eight grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, with the Rev. Stephen Ayers, associate rector of St. James Episcopal Church, Oneonta, officiating.

Burial will be in Oneonta Plains Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call at their convenience after 5 p.m., Saturday, at Bookhout Funeral Home, Oneonta. The family will be in attendance 7-9 p.m., Sunday.
